Briggs, Austin (1908-1973). Cartoonist & Illustrator. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by AUSTIN BRIGGS regarding an illustration he created for John Updike's story "The Lucid Eye in Silver Town". Redding, Connecticut:  [1964]. Over 90 words penned on his personal 10-1/2 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide stationery with his monogram embossed in blind at top right above his printed name and address, with an additional 25 word postscript penned by Briggs on the verso of the sheet. Austin Briggs writes about a drawing, which is not here present, illustrating John Updike's story "The Lucid Eye in Silver Town" which is to be published in the May 23, 1964 issue of The Saturday Evening Post". He mentions speaking to John Updike about the drawing "I spoke to him on the phone Friday nite and he was very happy that I was working on it" and goes on to suggest how the picture should be reproduced "I believe very strongly that the picture should 'bleed' only at the top and right side...." Signed "Austin" on the recto. In a fascinating postscript penned on the verso, Briggs then mentions that "I have made the 'boy' look a little like John Updike may have looked, as Updike admitted that the story was partly autobiographical". This postscript is further signed with his initials. There is a strip of masking tape along the top edge of the letter with offsetting to the recto. Else, near fine.

The cartoonist and illustrator Austin Briggs (1908-1973) worked as an assistant to the cartoonist Alex Raymond on his "Flash Gordon" comic strip and went on to succeed him on the "Secret Agent Corrigan" strip. He took over the "Flash Gordon" daily strip in 1940, giving it up in 1944 to work on illustrations for books and magazines.
