This qualitative miniature demonstrates stylistic criteria of works by well-known English artist Sir William Charles Ross and could with great likelihood be work of one of his pupils..

Sir William Charles Ross (1794, London - 1860, ibidem) was born into a well-known artist family. He was a son of William and Maria Ross, both miniaturists. The artist showed artistic ability already at a very early age. In the period from 1807 to 1817 he won prizes (the first one at the age of 13) at the Society of Arts for drawings, historical paintings and portraits. He also executed miniatures. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy between 1809 and 1859. In 1814 he became temporarily the assistant of Andrew Robertson, to whom he was related. Very quickly he became the most sought after English miniaturist of his period and did portraits of all members of the English court and of numerous members of the aristocracy, as well as of large number of foreigners (sic!). Ross painted many distinguished sitters including Queen Victoria, the Prince Consort, their children and other members of the royal family. He also worked a period at the Portuguese court. The artist became A.R.A. in 1838 and R.A. in 1842 and was dubbed knight in the same year. He was a compulsive worker and painted over 2200 miniatures. In 1857 he suffered a paralytic stroke and died unmarried in 1860.
Ross was one of the greatest miniaturists of his period. Besides all the portraits of the Court and members of the aristrocracy he painted in England, there was great demand for his work abroad, where he painted Louis Philippe, King of France; Prince Louis Napoleon; the Belgian royal Couple; the Empress Eugenie and many others.
