OPPO UDP-205 4K UHD Blu-ray Player — Excellent Condition, Fully Serviced

This one-owner OPPO UDP-205 belonged to a friend of a friend who has moved into a nursing home and can no longer use it. It’s in nice overall condition, with only a few minor cosmetic imperfections.

There is one small, shallow ding on the top cover and a few nicks along the top edge. I touched up the tiny marks with a Sharpie, and they practically disappear. You can barely feel them if you run your finger across the surface, and from a foot away, they’re virtually invisible. I mention them because this is a nice unit, and I want to be completely transparent about its condition.

### Fully Tested and Repaired

**UPDATE:** During testing, I discovered that 4K disc playback had become intermittent. Sometimes it worked perfectly, and other times it didn't. Standard Blu-ray and other discs were not affected.

The solution was to replace the optical assembly. I installed a new assembly, and **4K playback now works perfectly.**

One of the great things about this repair is that the replacement optical assembly is also used in Sony X700 and X800 players, as well as new Magnetar players. Since the same part continues to be used in other players, there is reason to be optimistic about its availability for years to come.

The UDP-205 chassis is large and modular, making the replacement relatively straightforward, although there are plenty of screws to remove! As an IT technician who builds and repairs computers, I found the job manageable.

I’m also including a used, good-condition optical assembly from a low hours Sony X700 that I had in stock with a bad AC adapter. I removed the assembly and stored it in an anti-static bag.

Think of it as a spare for 10 years down the road. If you ever need to repair the player and can’t find a new optical assembly for around $50, you’ll have this one available. If a new one is still available at that time, I’d recommend buying new instead.

The optical assembly includes the laser, laser-focus mechanism, and disc-spinning motor. The new assembly I installed and the used spare included with the player are identical in every detail. See pictures of the original part and the new replacement (the new one came with the blue removable cover over the lens).

For anyone who owns an OPPO UDP-203 or UDP-205, this is worth knowing: should your optical assembly eventually fail, replacement is a practical repair rather than necessarily the end of the player's life.
