A very good larger than average hallmarked silver blade (Sheffield 1897) fruit knife with Mother of Pearl scales by William Morton of Sheffield. The origin of William Morton & Sons dates back to the 1850’s and the firm of J&G Morton, Cutlers. By the early 1870’s, William Morton was running the company and himself passed away around 1889, leaving the business to his sons, William the younger and George. The company continued to operate as late as the 1960’s.
Measures approximately 3 3/16 inches long overall, closed. Sterling silver blade measures approximately 2 15/8 inches long, measured along the spine. Obverse blade hallmarked with Sheffield crown, Lion assay, date letter “e” for 1897 and the WM maker’s mark. Long pull nail nick. Good, deep luster rounded slab Mother of Pearl scales, almost gold lip, secured by two pins to the obverse, three to the reverse. Obverse with oblong, unengraved shield. Silver bolsters. Brass liners.
Condition is very good with some traces of light usage wear (but no dings) to the blade edge. Blade clean and bright, hallmarks clear. Scales with no chips or cracks. A good example.
