Publishing House of the German Association for Medical Dogs Seal
"German Association for Medical Dogs" is the historical German organization Deutscher Verein für Sanitätshunde. This association was dedicated to training "mercy dogs" or medical/sanitary dogs (Sanitätshunde) to locate wounded soldiers on the battlefield.
While the association did not operate a dedicated standalone printing house, its publishing history and literature are tightly linked to two primary historical figures:
- Stalling-Verlag (Gerhard Stalling Publishing House): During World War I, Heinrich Stalling (Heinrich C. Stalling) became the president of the association. He simultaneously ran his family's prominent publishing house, Stalling-Verlag. Under his leadership, the association pioneered training techniques, and in 1916, Stalling founded the world's first systematic guide dog school for the blind in Oldenburg. Consequently, official manuals and literature tied to the association's work during this era are heavily associated with Stalling-Verlag.
- Jean Bungartz: The association was originally founded in 1893 by Jean Bungartz, a celebrated German animal painter, author, and dog expert. He wrote and illustrated several fundamental manuals on the subject, such as "Der Sanitätshund: seine Behandlung, Pflege, Fütterung, Dressur und Führung" (1895), which served as the official instructional material for the association and military authorities.
