Few players have pushed the Telecaster into such dark and heavy territory as John 5.
The John 5 Phantom Telecaster was developed to meet his uncompromising playing style. Crafted by the Fender Custom Shop, this guitar reimagines the Telecaster for the modern player with exceptional technique.
Aggressive yet precise, it handles everything from chicken picking to metal.
Fascinated by the guitar and Telecaster in his childhood through the country music television show HeeHaw, John 5 established a global reputation as a guitarist for Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie, and is currently a member of Mötley Crüe. He has also collaborated and recorded with numerous artists across genres, including David Lee Roth and k.d. lang. He has also actively released solo works. John 5's playing style is characterized by his ability to effortlessly transition between a wide range of techniques, from the aggressive sounds and incredible speed of hard rock and metal to country-rooted chicken picking. And the guitar John 5 has consistently used throughout his career is the Telecaster.
The body features a carefully selected two-piece alder with "UltraContour" contouring, producing a rich resonance. The body is finished in gloss black urethane, creating a sharp and sophisticated look. The smooth Modern C-shaped maple neck is paired with a 10- to 14-inch compound radius flat-laminated ebony fingerboard. This provides excellent playability, from smooth chord work in the lower positions to clean, clear bending without fret buzz in the higher positions. With 22 medium jumbo frets, a 25.5-inch scale, and a satin urethane finish, it delivers the speedy and clear playing feel that John 5 demands. Furthermore, Luminlay luminous side dots ensure clear fret position visibility even on a dark stage.
The heart of the John5 Phantom Telecaster's sound lies in its two DiMarzio D Activator humbuckers. The bridge pickup delivers a tight, sharp attack, while the neck pickup produces a warm, musical tone. It features simple controls with only a 3-position toggle switch and master volume.
In addition, the FloydRose Original double-locking tremolo, recessed into the body, combined with the R7 locking nut and modern locking tuners, maintains excellent tuning stability even with repeated heavy whammy bar use.
Other premium features include a Bi-Flex truss rod, mother-of-pearl dot inlays, a Custom Shop V logo 4-bolt contoured neck plate, FloydRose retainer bar string tree, black hardware, and .009 to .042 nickel-plated steel strings. A deluxe hardshell case, strap, and official product certificate are included.
