An original 1991 Columbia Pictures press photograph for Boyz N The Hood, the John Singleton film, showing Cuba Gooding Jr. in a scene with a female co-star, printed black and white on 8 x 10 in glossy photographic paper and supplied loose and unframed. The image is a single portrait-format scene still set in a domestic interior: a young man in a pale short-sleeved sweatshirt sits with his head bowed against the waist of a standing woman in shorts, who rests her hand on the back of his head while he holds on to her arm. A window and net curtain fill the right of the frame with bright daylight, and shelved ornaments and a lamp are visible in the background. The still is printed with a white border, and a small printed reference number appears in the lower right of the image area.

Beneath the image, at lower left, is the film's distinctive stacked BOYZ N THE HOOD logo with the tagline "INCREASE THE PEACE" set below it. To the right of the logo is a small block of copyright and credit text, followed by the Columbia Pictures torch-lady emblem. The reverse is plain white and blank, with no studio stamp, caption slug or snipe applied.

Condition & size

Pre-owned in Very Good condition. The photograph presents cleanly with a sharp, glossy image and good contrast. There is light handling wear consistent with age and storage: very slight surface marking and faint handling creasing can be seen in places under direct light, and the white border shows minor age toning in spots. There is a small dark speck near the left edge of the reverse and a faint mark towards the lower right of the reverse. The corners and edges are intact, with no tears, no creases through the image, no pin holes and no tape or adhesive residue. It is unsigned, has not been trimmed, and is supplied loose and unframed. Please review all of the photographs closely, as they show the actual item you will receive and form part of this description.

Approx. 20.3 x 25.4 cm (8 x 10 in); approx. 15 g.

Background

Boyz N The Hood was released by Columbia Pictures in 1991 and was written and directed by John Singleton, who at 24 became the youngest person and the first African American ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director. The film follows Tre Styles, played by Cuba Gooding Jr., growing up in South Central Los Angeles, with a cast that also included Laurence Fishburne, Ice Cube, Morris Chestnut, Nia Long and Angela Bassett. Photographic stills like this one were produced by the studio in limited numbers and issued to press and cinemas as part of the publicity campaign rather than sold to the public, which is why original examples carry the studio logo and tagline printed directly beneath the image.

Who it's for

This will suit collectors of original film memorabilia and 1990s cinema, fans of Cuba Gooding Jr. and of John Singleton's work, hip-hop and Black cinema collectors, and anyone building a collection of genuine studio press stills rather than modern reprints. It also makes an easy piece to mount or frame for a home cinema, studio or office wall.

Estimated Date

1991. The film was released in July 1991 and the still carries the Columbia Pictures emblem and the original "INCREASE THE PEACE" campaign logo printed beneath the image, which places it with the film's original publicity campaign rather than any later reissue.
