An original Universal City Studios black and white press photograph for the 1992 family film Beethoven, issued under the alternate title "BEETHOVEN: STORY OF A DOG", carrying a 1991 studio copyright line and measuring the standard 10 x 8 inches, supplied loose as a single unframed photo.

The image is a posed cast group on the steps of the Newton family house, with the St Bernard sitting front and centre and the human cast arranged around him. Printed beneath the picture are three blocks of text: a studio copyright and reproduction-permission notice at the left, the film title in quotation marks in the centre, and a cast caption at the right naming (from left) Christopher Castle, Sarah Rose Karr, Nicholle Tom, Beethoven, Bonnie Hunt and Charles Grodin, with a small reference code below it. The photo has a glossy image area with clean white borders on all four sides. The reverse is plain and unprinted.

Condition & size

Pre-owned in Very Good condition. The photo is clean, flat and unframed with no tears, creases or folds. The image area is bright with good contrast and the borders are white and tidy. Please review all of the photographs closely, as they show the actual item you will receive and form part of this description.

Background

Beethoven was a Universal Pictures comedy directed by Brian Levant, written by Amy Holden Jones and John Hughes under the pseudonym Edmond Dantes, and released in 1992. It starred Charles Grodin and Bonnie Hunt as the Newton parents, with Nicholle Tom, Christopher Castile and Sarah Rose Karr as their children, and launched a long-running franchise of sequels and spin-offs. Studio press photographs like this one were sent out to newspapers and magazines as part of the publicity campaign rather than sold to the public, which is why they carry printed captions and reproduction notices. This example uses the alternate title "Beethoven: Story of a Dog", a variant recorded for the film and of particular interest to collectors.

Who it's for

This will appeal to film memorabilia collectors, fans of 1990s family comedies and the Beethoven franchise, and collectors of Charles Grodin, Bonnie Hunt or Nicholle Tom. It also suits dog lovers and St Bernard enthusiasts, and anyone looking for an affordable, genuine piece of studio publicity material to frame for a home cinema, playroom or office wall.

Estimated Date

1991. The printed copyright line beneath the image reads 1991 Universal City Studios, Inc., issued ahead of the film's 1992 release; the use of the alternate title "Beethoven: Story of a Dog" is consistent with pre-release publicity material.
