An original vintage colour snapshot photograph showing a Disney theme park marching band performing on Main Street U.S.A., believed to be at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in Florida, dating from the 1970s and measuring approximately 12.5 x 9 cm on Kodak photographic paper. One photograph only, supplied loose.

The image captures around a dozen bandsmen in red and white uniforms with peaked caps, playing trumpets, trombones, sousaphones and other brass, arranged in a line behind a low railing. A drum major or conductor in a full white uniform stands at the right, facing the band. They are grouped around the base of a tall white flagpole set in a circular raised bed planted with bright yellow flowers and edged with a dark metal railing. Behind them stands a large Victorian-style building in cream and white with a steep grey mansard roof, arched dormer windows, a long colonnaded arcade and lettered window signage. Bare winter trees rise at the left, a park bench sits at the lower right, and the roadway is laid in the distinctive reddish-pink paving. In the foreground, seen from behind, a woman with short fair hair in a blue checked blouse watches the performance. The print has a plain white border on all four sides. The reverse carries the repeating Kodak backprint reading THIS PAPER MANUFACTURED BY KODAK and PAPIER FABRIQUÉ PAR KODAK, together with heavy brown album-paper residue.

Condition & size

Pre-owned in Good condition for its age. The image side is bright, sharp and complete with good colour, free of creasing, and the white border is clean with only light handling marks and faint edge wear. There are no tears, no pinholes and no writing on the front. The reverse is heavily affected by removal from an old album: large irregular patches of brown album paper remain stuck to the back, concentrated in the centre and around all four edges, with fibrous tufts and lifted paper where the print was pulled free. A couple of small dark specks are present on the reverse. None of this residue shows through to the picture side, and the photograph lies flat. There is no date stamp, caption or inscription anywhere on the print. Supplied loose as a single photograph, with no album, mount or frame. Please review all of the photographs closely, as they show the actual item you will receive and form part of this description.

Approx. 12.5 x 9 cm (5 x 3.5 in) including white border; approx. 5 g

Background

Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom opened on 1 October 1971, and live marching bands have played on Main Street U.S.A. and in Town Square from the earliest days. Disney's own Florida band has long worn red, in contrast to the blue of the Disneyland Band in California, and the group eventually evolved into today's Main Street Philharmonic. Through the 1970s these daily performances, often staged at the Town Square flagpole, were a fixture of a guest's visit. Candid visitor snapshots of this era are increasingly collected, as they record uniforms, planting schemes, signage and park details rarely covered by official souvenir photography.

Who it's for

This will appeal to Disneyana collectors and Walt Disney World enthusiasts, particularly those who collect early Magic Kingdom and Main Street U.S.A. material, as well as theme park historians, marching band and brass band collectors, collectors of 1970s found photography and vernacular snapshots, and anyone looking for an affordable piece of genuine period Disney park history for a scrapbook, display frame or research collection.

Estimated Date

1970s, most likely between 1971 and the late 1970s. Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom did not open until 1 October 1971, which sets the earliest possible date. The clothing and hairstyle of the woman in the foreground, the bordered Kodak colour print format, and the Kodak backprint style are all consistent with the 1970s. The bilingual English and French Kodak backprint indicates Kodak-supplied paper stock used over a long period, so it narrows the era rather than pinpointing a year. There is no date stamp, caption or processing code visible on the print.
