A Disney Hidden Mickey trading pin from the Walt Disney World cast lanyard Crystal Ball Villains set, showing Cruella De Vil and numbered 5 of 5 on the reverse, dating from the 2007-2008 Hidden Mickey programme, measuring roughly 3.5 cm tall and supplied loose with a rubber pin back. The pin is cut to the shape of a crystal ball sitting on a small stand. Inside the ball Cruella is drawn in close-up against a banded yellow and orange background, her two-tone hair picked out in dark gold and pale cream, her brows drawn down into a scowl and her teeth bared, with the collar of her fur coat rising below her chin.

Towards the lower left of the ball sits the small grey Mickey head silhouette that gives the series its name. The reverse is silver-tone with a pebbled finish and carries three raised cartouches reading Hidden Mickey Pin, 5 of 5, the Official Disney Pin Trading logo, and (c)Disney CHINA.

Condition & size

Pre-owned in Good condition. The enamel on the front is bright and glossy with the colours still strong and no chips, cracks or losses visible. The silver-tone border and the reverse show light surface scuffing and a few tiny specks and marks consistent with having been handled and traded, including a small fleck near the right-hand edge of the back. The raised backstamps remain crisp and fully legible. The pin post is straight and the fitting is secure. Supplied loose, with a standard Mickey-head rubber pin back fitted. Please review all of the photographs closely, as they show the actual item you will receive and form part of this description.

Approx. 3 cm across the ball, 3.5 cm tall overall; approx. 10 g

Background

Hidden Mickey pins are open-edition pins issued to Walt Disney World and Disneyland cast members, worn on lanyards and traded with guests. Each one hides a small Mickey head somewhere in the artwork and carries a numbered "x of y" backstamp so collectors can work out how many pins complete the set. The Crystal Ball Villains run belongs to the 2007-2008 WDW cast lanyard assortment and contains five pins - Captain Hook, Ursula, Maleficent, Chernabog and Cruella De Vil - each villain framed inside a differently coloured crystal ball on a stand. Alongside lanyard trading, the pins were also sold in sealed two-pin mystery pouches. Cruella is the yellow ball and the fifth pin in the set.

Who it's for

One for Disney pin traders working through the Hidden Mickey cast lanyard series, collectors chasing the five-pin Crystal Ball Villains set, and anyone who collects Disney Villains or 101 Dalmatians memorabilia. It also makes an easy, inexpensive gift or stocking filler for a Cruella De Vil fan, or a ready-to-trade pin for a first trip to the parks.

Estimated Date

2007-2008. The Crystal Ball Villains set was released into the Walt Disney World Hidden Mickey cast lanyard programme in September 2007 and ran into 2008, with backs of this series dated either year. The small date stamp within the Official Disney Pin Trading logo on this example is not clearly legible in the photographs, so the first year of the range has been used in the item specifics.
