An original 1980s colour snapshot photograph on genuine Kodak paper, approx. 13 x 9 cm with a white border, showing a marching band in white uniforms performing on a paved plaza at what is believed to be Walt Disney World in Florida. The location is not captioned anywhere on the print, so please judge from the photos.

The band is in mid-march, led by brass players with trumpets and trombones, with a sousaphone and a large bass drum towards the rear and a flag or colour guard member alongside. They wear white trousers and white tops, and one figure at the left appears to be a drum major with arm raised. Behind them rises a huge, smooth, windowless white curved wall, with young trees, a dark screened section and modern paving typical of a purpose-built American theme park esplanade. A handful of onlookers stand to the right, and a young boy in a striped polo shirt watches from the foreground. The colours are warm and sun-bleached, with the slightly soft focus of an amateur holiday camera. The reverse carries the repeating Kodak watermark reading THIS PAPER MANUFACTURED BY KODAK / PAPIER FABRIQUÉ PAR KODAK, and there is no handwriting, caption or date stamp. Supplied as a single loose photograph exactly as pictured.

Condition & size

Pre-owned in Good condition. The image side is clean and bright with good colour retention for its age, no creasing, no tears and no visible surface scratches; the white border is intact on all four sides with lightly bumped corners. The reverse shows clear brownish-orange adhesive residue from previous album or scrapbook mounting, heaviest down the right-hand edge, with smaller patches near the upper left, lower centre and corners. This residue is on the back only and does not show through to the picture. There is no writing, caption, date stamp or processing mark on either side. Supplied loose and unframed as a single photograph. Please review all of the photographs closely, as they show the actual item you will receive and form part of this description.

Approx. 13 x 9 cm including the white border; approx. 5 g

Background

Marching bands have been part of the daily fabric of Walt Disney World since the resort opened in 1971, with resident ensembles performing along Main Street, U.S.A. and, after EPCOT Center opened in 1982, along the Future World and World Showcase routes. Alongside the resident bands, visiting high school and college groups have long auditioned to march in the parks, a tradition later formalised as Magic Music Days in 1987 and continued today under Disney Imagination Campus. Candid guest snapshots like this one are increasingly collected as vernacular photography: unposed, undirected records of how the parks and their visitors actually looked, which official publicity images rarely capture.

Who it's for

One for Disney park history collectors and theme park memorabilia enthusiasts, particularly those who collect candid guest-eye views of the Florida parks rather than official publicity shots. It will also appeal to marching band, brass band and school music history collectors, to found photography and vernacular snapshot collectors, and to anyone drawn to 1980s American nostalgia. It suits scrapbooking, framing, collage and mixed-media art, and makes an inexpensive and unusual gift for a band parent or a Disney fan.

Estimated Date

Estimated circa 1980 to 1989. The evidence is the Kodak repeating back-print watermark used on colour print stock of this era, the characteristic warm colour palette and dye shift of an early 1980s C-type amateur print, and the clothing and hairstyles of the onlookers. There is no date stamp or processing code visible, so the decade cannot be narrowed further with certainty.
