Canon AE-1 Program body (April 1981 build) in the more unusual and desirable black finish, together with the sought-after New FD 35mm f/2.8 lens. Ideal combination for street photography.

The AE-1 Program body is in good condition. Some rubs and marks from use (in particular base plate and film type holder), although unusually little wear from strap lugs. The viewfinder has been cleaned internally and so is relatively clear of the usual bits and pieces, so just a few small marks on the screen.
The camera does not have the Canon "squeak", and works exactly as it should. Additionally, all seals have recently been replaced.

The New FD 35mm f/2.8 is renowned for its optical performance in a very compact and lightweight body. It is prized, and mongst other uses, for street photography - giving a wider than standard view but retaining reasonable subject size.
This particular example has good focus and aperture and is cosmetically very nice. I have struggled to photograph them, but there is a small mark on the front element and peripheral traces of historic fungus just inside the rear element. The rear element has been thoroughyl cleaned to ensure no remaining fungus, so it is just a little light etching at the edge. I would not expect either of these to have a discernible effect on photos in most circumstances. I have reflected this in the price, though, so this is a real bargain for such a kit.
This lens is a very early production model indeed. Date code of S1200 indicates December 1978, many months before the official release of New FD lenses. The serial number 10542 puts it well inside the first 1000 examples built (serial numbers for this lens begin at 10001).

The lens comes with the dedicated Canon BW-52A lens hood. The achilles heel of all Canon FD hoods of bayonet fitting, is the rubberised lugs which hold the hood firmly on the lens. They degrade over time (pretty much no matter how they were used or stored), and almost all examples now either don't stay firmly on the lens, or leave a sticky white residue behind after detaching. That is, unless they have been refurbished to replace those lugs.
This hood has had the degraded lugs removed. Replacement lugs made of 1mm-thick quality neoprene have been installed. The hood has then been tested a number of times on this lens and has a good fit. The "look" of the lugs will not be perfect and wear will show, but far better than the worn material in almost all examples. On the BS-55 hood, the hood can be attached by rotating in either direction.
Like any wearing part, the replacement lugs will have a finite life as they wear, but can themselves be replaced in the future. No glue or other damaging material has been used to prevent that. To prolong life of the lugs, it is advisable to save mounting and unmounting the hood to when it is required - and not to use it as a fidget object!
The hood has a fair amounbt of cosmetic wear from use - which is rather that they are for!

Also comes with the correct genuine Canon front cap (the C-52 plastic version).

A lovely set indeed.
