A highly detailed OO9 scale model of one of Britain's most unusual and innovative industrial steam locomotives.
The Sentinel Industrial Locomotive (SIL) was developed by Sentinel Waggon Works of Shrewsbury during the late 1920s as a modern alternative to conventional industrial steam locomotives. At a time when diesel power was beginning to challenge steam, Sentinel drew upon its extensive experience building steam wagons and road vehicles to create a locomotive unlike anything else operating on Britain's industrial railways.
Instead of a traditional horizontal boiler and outside cylinders, the SIL utilised Sentinel's distinctive vertical water-tube boiler, enclosed high-speed steam engine and chain-driven transmission. This arrangement produced a compact, powerful and economical locomotive particularly suited to quarries, brickworks, construction projects, mines, reservoir schemes and contractor's railways.
The exposed drive chains, prominent vertical boiler, minimalist cab and unmistakably industrial appearance gave these locomotives a character all of their own. Although ultimately overtaken by diesel technology, the Sentinel Industrial Locomotive remains one of the most fascinating and innovative narrow-gauge steam locomotive designs ever produced.

Sentinel introduced the Industrial Locomotive in 1927 as part of its effort to modernise steam traction for industrial users. Drawing heavily on the company's successful steam wagon technology, the design incorporated a compact vertical boiler, enclosed steam motor and chain-driven transmission mounted within a robust plate-frame chassis.
The locomotives could be supplied with a variety of customer-specified options including enclosed cabs, additional ballast, lighting equipment, brakes, power sanders and alternative coupling arrangements. This flexibility made them popular with industrial users operating in challenging environments.
Many examples worked on demanding industrial railways carrying stone, ore, construction materials and supplies. Their compact dimensions, economical operation and relatively low maintenance requirements made them particularly attractive to contractors operating temporary railways in remote locations.
Today the Sentinel Industrial Locomotive is remembered as one of the most innovative industrial steam locomotive designs ever produced and an important link between traditional steam practice and the industrial diesel era that followed.

This model has been specifically designed around the TM-TR02 chassis from TOMYTEC, which is readily available from a variety of suppliers and on Ebay for as little as 15-20 GBP
The chassis is designed as a straightforward drop-in fit and can be secured using the modeller's preferred method. This may range from a permanent installation using adhesive to a removable arrangement, allowing a single chassis to be transferred between multiple locomotive bodies. This flexibility enables modellers to customise their installation to suit their operating and display requirement
