Very rare purple shino contemporary art chawan by Sugimoto Sadamitsu (b.1935) who is a Zen Buddhist Priest at the Daitoku‑ji temple in Kyoto. In my opinion he is one of the most talented modern tea bowl makers. His bowls don't demand attention but deserve all the attention they can get. Subtle, spiritual, and masterfully made, I highly recommend his work particulary if you are looking for an authentic matcha bowl or an artistic collectors chawan.

The chawan I am selling comes with the original signed wooden box, original shifuku, cloth and double box - which generally speaking is a sign of exhibition or otherwise high quality work by the artist. This piece was made before he was given the Buddhist name Genkaku Sadamitsu but definately new production. I am not aware of his purple shino being made pre-2010. I have one old exhibition catalogue from 2014 with very similar Purple Shino with same brown rough clay. The cloth, small yellow with a seal is something I am not used to see with his modern work. I cannot verify if it's an original cloth or later replacement.

The bowl itself is excellent work by Sadamitsu. As a person with small hands I really appreciate this exact form he uses a lot. It's not travel (Tabi-chawan) but a normal chawan but from the smaller size of the spectrum. I don't know what the clay is but this clay he has been using a lot with shino glazes at least in the mid-2010's era. The shino itself is a beautiful mixture of white, purple and red giving a fascinating scenery alond with the unusual clay.

The chawan seems to be unused. There is no damage, signs of use or odors. The rougher spots in in the lower part of the bowl are normal for his work the area where the wadding was (stuff that separates the piece from kiln so it doesent burn stuck)

As the last photo I attached a picture of the example work - very similar chawan from 2014 exhibition.
