Mason's Ashworth Set of 8 Cup & Saucers Patent Ironstone 1891-1923 Green Silver
Exquisite Decorative MASON'S PATENT IRONSTONE Set of 6 Fruit Dessert Bowls from G.L. Ashworth & Bros., Brown on Cream, from Hanley, Staffordshire, England, circa 1891-1922

DESCRIPTION:  This superb quality patent ironstone china has colors that are dark and vivid.  The fruit dessert bowls have a scalloped rim on a blank of cream china.  The most striking thing about this set is the romantic scene set in nature which highlights the trees, leaves and trim lines on the bowls.  This is such a beauty!  We have a large set of this pattern, Watteau Brown, that we are listing on eBay.

CONDITION:  While this set of 6 fruit dessert bowls is classified as used, the condition is superb.  There are no chips, cracks, rubbings or hairlines.  There is very light crazing under the glaze on the back of some.  There is a very minor nick on the inside rim of 1.  There is gold glitter in the bottom of 1.  This is not really visible and does not affect the use of the bowl.  Since it it tightly adhered, we did not attempt to remove it.  See the photos.  There is no wear to the brown color.

DIMENSIONS:
The bowls have a diameter of 5 3/8" with a height of 1 1/8".

HISTORY/MARKS:
Ironstone was first patented in 1813 by Charles James Mason. The Masons were a family of potters and had been developing a number of potting techniques at their works at Lane Delph, Fenton.  The patent was No. 3724 was for a process for the "Improvement of the Manufacture of English Porcelain, PATENT IRONSTONE".  This was a hardened durable earthenware made from Cornwall clay, ironstone slag, flint and blue oxide of cobalt.  The initial patent was for 14 years and was not renewed.  (However, the “Patent Ironstone China” notation is still used!)  It has a very interesting history leading to G.L. Ashworth & Bros. (Ltd. after 1914) acquiring the business in 1860; the brothers were George Leach, James & Taylor.  The company was acquired in 1884 by John Shaw Goddard and remained in the Goddard family until 1973 even though the name reverted to Mason’s Ironstone China, Ltd. in 1968.  The company was purchased by Josiah Wedgwood & Sons, Ltd. in 1973 and continued to use the Mason’s brand name.  The mark on the bottom of this item is cited by the website marks4ceramics as mark #32.  "England" was added to this mark in 1891 and "Made in England was added in 1923.  As this mark contains "England", this sets the circa for this to be 1891-1922.
