This is a 100% genuine fossilised Megalodon tooth. Megalodon
(Otodus megalodon) is an extinct species of shark, renowned as the largest
shark to have ever existed. Reaching lengths of up to approximately 79 feet (24
metres), Megalodon dominated the oceans for millions of years. The impressive
size estimates of Megalodon are derived from the examination of hundreds of
fossilised teeth, several vertebral columns, and a handful of individual
vertebrae. Specimens have been uncovered dating from the early Miocene Epoch,
approximately 23 million years ago, through to the end of the Pliocene Epoch,
about 3 million years ago.
Megalodon possessed a jaw that spanned between 2.7 and 3.4 metres in width. This massive jaw was lined with roughly 276 teeth, each suited for its predatory lifestyle. Appropriately, the name 'Megalodon' translates to 'giant tooth', highlighting its most distinctive feature.
This 100% genuine Megalodon tooth was discovered off the west coast of Florida, USA - an area renowned for being one of the world's premier locations for finding shark fossils. It measures 80 x 65 x 20mm (3.25 x 2.5 x 0.75 inches). The fossil is presented in an elegant Kraft cardboard gift box, which is 92 x 92 x 26mm, for display purposes and to keep it safe - it also contains an information label giving a certified description of the contents.
