ITEM: This is an original World War I WWI military humor or satire card dated 1919 by American illustrator Louis E. Woolf. The card measures approx. 6 by 3 5/16 inches, the back of the card is blank. Louis E. Woolf was an American illustrator and soldier who created a series of pen-and-ink drawings documenting military life during and immediately following World War I. Woolf produced original ink-on-card/paper sketches and editorial-style illustrations. Many of his pieces were formatted on postcard-sized cardstock or standard drawing sheets. Most of his known wartime and occupation artwork dates to around 1918–1919, created while serving in France during the war and during the demobilization period following the Armistice. Unlike official war artists who focused on dramatic combat scenes or frontline destruction, Woolf focused primarily on military humor, cartoon satire, and daily soldier life.
