SUPERBLY ENGRAVED VICTORIAN CRYSTAL TUMBLER
FALLOW DEER BUCK CHASED BY HOUND
IN WOODED LANDSCAPE
This listing is for a superbly engraved crystal tumbler which depicts a hunting scene with a hound chasing a fallow deer buck in a wood or forest. High quality engraving ensures that you can see the energy of both animals as the bound around the glass in perpetual pursuit. The fear of the buck is obvious but it need not worry as the hound is on the opposite side of the glass and will never catch up. You can also see the detail that the engraver has brought to both animals. For example you can see their ribs and the detail of their faces.
Engraving of this type became popular in the second half of the 19th century. So much so that there were insufficient proficient engravers in Britain to meet demand. The result was that glassmakers induced Bohemian engravers to come to Britain to work. The glass is not signed, as is normal for the period. However, the fact that the glass is engraved with a fallow buck suggests the engraver was an immigrant rather than a British born engraver who would have depicted a red deer. Wherever he was born he certainly a highly skilled craftsman.
In good condition, the tumbler is 9.2cm high.
