ANTIQUE JAPANESE SATSUMA CHARGER
MEIJI PERIOD, MID TO LATE 19TH CENTURY
DIMENSIONS
About 12" diameter
DESCRIPTION
Fine Meiji-period Japanese Satsuma charger, elaborately decorated in polychrome enamels and gilt with extensive moriage raised enamel, jewelling and gilt decoration, depicting a Rakan (Arhat) in a mountainous landscape. He is shown as a bald, bearded figure with elongated earlobes and a stern expression, wearing an extraordinarily detailed robe covered with geometric and scrolling textile patterns. In front of him is a pedestal offering vessel or bowl containing peaches, while the surrounding landscape includes rock formations, trees, and a distant mountain. The border is particularly impressive, consisting of repeated turquoise-blue floral medallions surrounded by dense arabesque and bead-like decoration. The reverse is largely undecorated, showing a buff-colored satsuma body with a slightly raised foot.
CONDITION
Overall very good antique condition. Very heavy. No chips, cracks or evidence of repair. Some slight roughage around the bottom of the foot. Colors bright and unfaded (all visible in the images).
