One of the most romantic Gothic streetscapes in central Germany glows with hand-lithographed warmth in this rare 1899 card from Erfurt — the great Cathedral of St. Mary looming in brick-red majesty at left, the twin-towered St. Severikirche in green copper rising to the right, and the grand cathedral steps sweeping downward to where two ladies in Victorian dress pause in conversation. Printed by the prestigious Berlin firm Littauer & Boysen, this early undivided-back litho predates the Golden Age of postcards and carries a personal inscription dated October 26, 1899, written in the ornate Kurrent German script of the era. The sender mentions receiving a letter "with great joy" and sending along a small cutting — possibly a newspaper clipping or flower — a tender, intimate gesture frozen across more than 125 years.
