Since its debut in 1986, the Fender American Standard, commonly known as the "American Standard," has been a staple of Fender USA's regular line for 30 years.
This 1988 model (neck date 11-03-88) features a pewter-colored maple fretboard! It weighs 3.67kg.
It utilizes the classic wood materials: an alder body, maple neck, and 22-fret maple fretboard. Of course, the neck joint is a 4-bolt construction. Features include a 9.5R radius, medium jumbo frets, and a 2-bolt bridge for easy tremolo arm operation. Controls are 1 Volume, Tone (front), and TBX Tone (center & rear), with a 5-way pickup selector. It's equipped with three original American Standard Single-Coil Strat pickups. The electronics are also likely original.
The American Standard is a super long-selling model, but many of the American Standards from the 1990s, like the Eric Clapton model, feature the TBX tone control, offering a wider range of high-frequency control and a different kind of charm compared to later models.
Furthermore, the 1988 model is considered an early era for the American Standard, and its exquisite coloring—a blend of gray and silver, similar to the one Clapton used—is another distinctive feature. Although it's over 35 years old, it gives the impression of using high-quality wood even compared to current models. It's a great guitar, and it's easy to see why it's still loved by musicians!
Personally, I would definitely recommend this one over its successors, the American Professional and American Professional II.
