DESCRIPTION

Beautiful handmade American folk art inlaid checkerboard dating from the mid-19th century to the third quarter 19th century.  Likely Pennsylvania origin.  Constructed with contrasting solid woods, probably maple and mahogany.  Wide mitered border fastened with early round head screws.  Cockbeaded border around the playing field. Decorative incised compass and hex-sign style geometric decoration. Original surface with excellent color and honest wear from age and use.

CONDITION

Overall very good.  Structurally complete, sturdy and sound.  Two small sections missing from the cockbeaded border.  Rich, dark surface patina (all visible in the images).
