A large, finely engraved map, "A Map of the County of Flanders," by Guillaume (William) de l'Isle, Member of the Academy Royal of Sciences at Paris — one of the most important and influential cartographers of the early 18th century, renowned for his scientifically rigorous mapmaking. This English-market edition was "Sold by John Senex at the Globe against St. Dunstan's Church, Fleetstreet in London," dating the plate to approximately the 1710s–1720s, when Senex was actively publishing English editions of de l'Isle's French originals.
The map covers historic Flanders in detail, from the coastal towns of Ostend, Bruges, and Dunkirk inland through Lille, Tournai, and the Brussels/Ghent region, with hundreds of towns, forests, and rivers finely engraved and labeled. Political boundaries are delineated in hand-applied outline color (pink, green, yellow). A large baroque title cartouche in the lower right features allegorical figures — Minerva/Mars in armor, trumpeting angels, and a cherub amid martial trophies and clouds — a hallmark of high-quality Augustan-era map decoration. A triple distance scale (Common Leagues of Flanders, Common Leagues of France, British Computed Miles) appears in the lower left.
