- Etymology: The name comes from the Greek words hyper ("over") and sthenos ("strength"), alluding to its superior hardness compared to similar minerals like hornblende.
- Discovery: First identified by German mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner (initially named paulite) and later verified as a unique species by Abbé René Just Haüy.
- Origin: Major deposits are found in Canada (specifically Ontario, which is noted for meteorite-impact sites), Japan, Australia, the US, and Norway. It has even been identified in lunar rocks by NASA’s Apollo missions.
- Jewelry: Because of its deep gray-to-black color and directional coppery or silvery shimmer, jewelers primarily cut it into cabochons (smooth, rounded stones) for rings, pendants, and bracelets.
- Home & Decorative: Used for carved figurines, spheres, and palm stones. Powdered hypersthene is sometimes used in cosmetics like powders and blush.

How to Check if Real or Fake
Sellers may mistakenly (or intentionally) misidentify less expensive minerals or glass as hypersthene. You can authenticate it using these methods:
- Visual Schiller Effect: Authentic hypersthene displays a distinct, directional coppery, silvery, or bronze metallic sheen that appears to flash from within the stone when rotated in the light.
- The Scratch Test: Real hypersthene has a hardness of 5.5 on the Mohs scale. It should be able to scratch glass, whereas plastic or glass fakes will be easily scratched themselves.
- Look for Inclusions: Natural stones have microscopic internal growth patterns, lamellae, or cleavage planes. Glass imitations look perfectly uniform or contain regular, rounded air bubbles.
