Artist Biography: Florencio Vial (c. 1875–1950)
Florencio Vial was a prominent Chilean landscape painter active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Based out of the historic coastal city of Valparaíso, Chile, Vial became highly celebrated for his atmospheric, romanticized depictions of the Chilean countryside.
He was a master of capturing the shifting light over the Andes mountain range, winding river valleys, and traditional rural dwellings. His signature works are characterized by a delicate handling of light, a soft impressionistic touch, and a deep appreciation for regional South American geography. Today, Vial’s paintings are highly collectible examples of Latin American regional impressionism and are represented in major municipal collections, including the Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes de Valparaíso.
