A spectacular, museum-quality antique early 20th-century Real Photo Postcard (RPPC) or panorama-style print capturing a historic harvesting threshing crew in southern Minnesota. This exceptional image features unparalleled documentary clarity, showing a massive field crew at work during the golden era of Midwestern agriculture.
CAMERA & PRINTING HISTORY:
This rare oversized postcard was produced using the historic "Al-Vista" panoramic process by the Multiscope and Film Company of Burlington, Wisconsin. Known for their swinging-lens panoramic cameras manufactured in the late 1890s and 1900s, Al-Vista prints are highly prized for their wide field of view. The reverse side features the authentic, vertical "MULTISCOPE AND FILM CO. - 'AL-VISTA'" printer imprint along the edge. The divided-back layout securely places the production of this card to the 1905–1907 window. The upper corner notation: "Uncle Gus / Kamholz farm."
DOCUMENTED HISTORICAL PROVENANCE:
This photograph depicts the extended family and threshing crew of Gustav Kamholz and his wife Bertha (Bartz) Kamholz. Gustav immigrated to America from Germany in 1882, working as a farm hand to learn American agricultural methods. He initially accumulated enough capital to rent a farm in Nicollet County near St. Peter, Minnesota, for three years.
In 1890, the family permanently relocated west to Redwood County, purchasing a homestead in Section 26 of Morgan Township. It was on this Redwood County farm that their large barn was built in 1901 and their modern 8-room farmhouse was constructed in 1912, perfectly dating the vintage transition-era technology captured in this photograph.
The image offers a phenomenal look at early 1900s farming equipment working side-by-side. It features multiple teams of powerful draft horses hitched to binder and grain wagons, a large gathering of field laborers holding harvest tools, and an early vintage mechanical tractor unit centered in the field amidst fresh wheat shocks.
