The Holden VL Commodore Group A SS Walkinshaw Was Built to Homologate the Group A Race Car. Following Holden's Split with Peter Brock and the Dissolution of The Holden Dealer Team in 1987. The VL Walkinshaw Would be the First Car to Roll out of Tom Walkinshaw Racing's Newly Formed Holden Special Vehicles Operation in Melbourne.
Although the TWR Developed Body Kit Added an Extra 65kg, it was Able to Reduce the Drag from the Previous Group A Commodore by 25%, With the Radical Design Coming From the Benefit of the MIRA Wind Tunnel in Britain. From Airflow Channeling at the Front, Lift Pressure Extraction at the Side, and Drag Reduction at the Rear, the Unique Design is Pure Function over Form.
Under The Bonnet Was Holden's First V8 to Have Electronic Fuel Injection. The Engine Also Featured Twin Throttle Body Intakes That Sat Higher Than the Bonnet Line, Requiring the Vented Raised Bonnet Scoop. The Group A Engine Development Was Performed in House at Holden, With Fine Tuning Done by Holden Motor Sport Driver Larry Perkins.
The engine was Almost Totally Redesigned For It?s Made for racing Role in the SS Group A SV. The Group A's V8 Engine Had Port Mounted Injectors and Electronic Control of Fuel Delivery and Idle Speed. There Were Hardware Differences, Four Bolt Main Bearing Caps (They Hold the Crank Better Than Two Bolt Caps) and Roller Rockers for Better Valve Opening And Closing Control at High Revs.
Two Throttle Bodies Feed a Box Like Plenum Housing, a Tuned Length Bell Mouthed Intake Runner For Each Cylinder. The Primary 65mm Throttle Body Satisfied the Engines Lust for Life at Low to Middle Power Requirements. The Second 80mm Pipe Opened Progressively as The Driver's Foot Approached the Floor. From the Showroom, There was a Plastic Restrictor in The 80mm Throttle Body.
The Group A's Exhaust System Began With a Very Complicated But Cunning Set of Eight Individual Primary Pipes Each With a Join Adjacent to the Head. This Allowed the Holden Racing Team and Other Race Teams to Exploit The Racing Regulations That Allowed The Exhaust to Be Free From The First Join.
As With all VL V8s, The Production Car's Exhaust was Plumbed with a Catalytic Converter.
Only
Produced in one Colour, Panorama Silver the VL Walkinshaw Was Limited to a
Production Run of 750 Vehicles. Initially The Demand was High, But With the
Arrival of the New Look VN Commodore Sales Slowed. When the VL Walkinshaw Was
Released The Design was Polarising, but Now VL Walkinshaw is One of The Most
Iconic Holdens Ever Produced.
Model Includes Certificate And Production Number Plate, Mounted to the Chassis.
