Offered here is a beautiful and historically significant 1892 South African Republic 2½ Shillings, struck in sterling silver (.925) during the presidency of Paul Kruger.
The 1892 coinage marked the first full issue of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR), the independent Boer republic that existed before the South African War (Boer War). These first-year coins were struck in Berlin, Germany, before the Republic's own mint in Pretoria began operations, making them especially desirable among collectors of South African and world coinage.
The obverse features the distinguished portrait of President Paul Kruger, one of the most important figures in South African history. The reverse displays the coat of arms of the South African Republic together with the denomination and the national motto, "Eendragt Maakt Magt" ("Unity Makes Strength").
Specifications:
What I particularly appreciate about these early Kruger coins is that they represent a vanished country and a pivotal chapter in South African history. They are not simply silver coins—they are tangible artifacts from a nation that no longer exists.
Please review all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description and condition assessment.
A wonderful addition to any collection of South African, Boer War, British Commonwealth, or world silver coinage.
