Pompeian Bronze
"Homer's Iliad" Horsemen Bookends, Model 114
Art Deco Era, Circa 1920s
This pair of bookends by the renowned Pompeian Bronze Company features dynamic horsemen inspired by Homer's Iliad. Produced during the height of the Art Deco movement in the early 20th century, these pieces demonstrate the company's signature aesthetic, blending classical Greek subject matter with the heavy, streamlined forms favored in period decorative arts. The composition captures the energy of ancient warfare through finely detailed armored figures on rearing steeds.
• Cast metal construction with a multi-toned polychrome bronze-tone finish
• Sculptural relief featuring armored horsemen with classical Greek motifs
• Manufacturer marks READABLE: "POMPEIAN BRONZE", "HOMERS ILIAD", and model "114"
• Substantial weight of approximately 10.8 lbs per bookend (21.6 lbs total)
Condition: Good vintage condition consistent with age and use. The polychrome finish shows natural surface wear and patina development, particularly on high points of the sculpture. Structural integrity is excellent with no visible cracks, breaks, or repairs. Original blue felt pads are present on both bases, showing typical age-appropriate shelf wear and light fading.
