Antique Shino bowl by artist Kato Shuntai. The first generation of Kato Shuntai was born in 1799 but it's unclear how many generations there were and what of the various seals was used by which generations. Based on the information I have read from literature the seal on the bowl I am selling was used between 1820-1840. (See last photo attached. Photo of the signatures not included as a physical copy)
Shino bowl, propably a small chawan (tea bowl). The bowl is in excellent condition. It shows some patina but there are no cracks, chips missing, damage or repair. The firing is of the object is absolutely beautiful, the combination of white shino, brown firing colors and black iron painting makes this objects feel like it's in harmony.
- Height 7 cm
- Diameter 10.5 cm
- Weight 180 grams
I have also included an example photo of Kato Shuntai shino chawan I found from Japanese literature. The purpose of the example is to show how similar the firing and use of glaze is, even though the one on the example is more sophisticated bowl, the "handwriting" is the same. The example photo is not included as a physical copy.
"Kato Shuntai, a son of Shunzan, the potter, was born in 1799, and at an early age became interested in the potter's art. He worked for a number of years in the village of Akatsu (Provinence of Owari), and made tea-utensils of a sober character. His work shows some versatility, yet he did not aspire to do more than to follow the path of Owari potters of that time. His signature may be found on pottery resembling typical Ki Seto, Akatsu, typical Seto, and Shino Oribe"
