A St. George Building Society Dragon 1990's Issue Green Plastic Coin Money Box.
The St George Happy Dragon money box in green in good condition. This is a later issue re-usable model with a bottom bung which is intact. Condition is very good with some dust from years on display, a gentle clean needed. Please review the photos carefully.
The mould for this issue is yet another change with no scales at all. The stomach area is lined rather than scaled. The embossed logo is the Dragon symbol wih st.george in all lower case. This one now has the coin slot behind the right arm which is raised with the palm showing as a greeting. I have seen at least 4 different designs with this being most likely a very late issue.
The ‘Happy Dragon' campaign was used throughout the 1980's and 1990's. There are two versions of the Dragon character that I am currently aware of. This one has his arms akimbo and a rather stern look with the chin tucked-in. This style is a later issue with the St George brand moulded into the base plate. The earlier issue some had stick-on labels for St George at the base and ‘eyes' over the plastic eyes. My best guess is the ones without the stickers were a cost-saving version. There is then a later style with the head more upright and the left hand raised as if to say Hi, I am a happier looking dragon?
