The 1964 Austrian Grand Prix was the first World Championship Grand Prix held in Austria, run on the rough Zeltweg Airfield circuit on 23 August. The bumpy concrete surface tore cars apart through the field, and victory fell to Ferrari's Lorenzo Bandini, who came through from seventh on the grid for his only Grand Prix win. Dan Gurney set the official lap record in a Brabham BT7. John Surtees lined up on the front row in the year he would clinch the World Championship for Ferrari, while Jack Brabham was campaigning his own marque. Future World Champion Jochen Rindt made his Grand Prix debut here.
