The 1977 24 Hours of Le Mans produced one of Jacky Ickx's most celebrated drives. After Henri Pescarolo's 936 retired with engine failure, Ickx was transferred to the sister Martini Porsche of Hurley Haywood and Jurgen Barth, then languishing in 41st place and fifteen laps behind. Through the night the Belgian drove at near-qualifying pace, hauling the 936/77 back into contention as the dominant Renaults faltered. The car limped across the line on five cylinders, giving Ickx his fourth Le Mans win and Haywood his first of three. The race remains a benchmark for nerveless endurance driving.
