Offered for your consideration is a vintage Esterbrook Model J fountain pen, USA-manufactured c.1955. This double-jewel Esterbrook features a stunning metallic gray plastic resin cap and barrel with stainless steel clip, J-bar fill lever, and trim.

Please have a look at my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if this Esterbrook pen should be yours.

This Esterbrook Model J is in clean, good physical condition. It measures just over 5” long with the cap in place, 6⅛” with cap on top, and a hand-filling ½” wide. There are no cracks, chips, or true scratches, just some typical light use and storage marks from the years. However, the black plastic nib section has several nicks and impression blemishes, as pictured.

In addition, the steel parts are also in nice shape with no tarnish or pitting noted. Plus, the later spoon-ended fill lever actuates correctly, the barrel thread seats the cap positively, and the clip rests snugly on the cap with no gap. And, the Esterbrook barrel imprint is clearly visible, though perhaps it was struck a bit lightly. Overall, this old Model J presents quite well.

The pen has Esterbrook’s 2556 Firm Fine nib which looks to be worn at an irregular angle, as pictured. Accordingly, I’m including a spare, unused Esterbrook 1554 RENEW-POINT, also Firm Fine but a bit shorter, that screws into the section easily and is pictured directly below.

I gave the pen a thorough cool water rinse to chase out the residual ink from the nib, feed, and cap. But, even though the fill bar lever has proper movement, it was soon apparent that the pen was not pulling water. So, unfortunately, it would be the same with ink.
As such, a new bladder needs to be installed for this pen to function correctly. Once it is serviced by a handy collector or their pen shop, this Esterbrook J should be a nice writer!

As pictured and described, this handsome Esterbrook Model J fountain pen is offered at a competitive price.
