Antique 1857 J.H. Colton Map of the Territories of Washington and Oregon

Offered here is a genuine original hand-colored map from J.H. Colton’s atlas, dated circa 1855-1857 (commonly referenced as the 1857 edition). This attractive steel-engraved map shows the vast Territories of Washington and Oregon shortly after the region’s early settlement and organization.

Key Features Visible:

Detailed depiction of the Pacific Northwest, including the Columbia River, Willamette Valley, Puget Sound, and inland territories extending to the Continental Divide.

Early territorial boundaries (pre-statehood).

Mountain ranges (Cascades, Rockies), rivers, passes (including South Pass), forts, and early trails.

Hand coloring outlining the territories in pink and green.

Classic Colton decorative border with intricate scrollwork.

Condition: Fair — Suitable for framing and display.

The map has tears and wear to the margins, which have been neatly repaired with archival tape on the reverse. There is some overall toning, minor foxing, and edge wear consistent with its age (see photos). The image area remains clean and attractive, with strong engraving and nice original hand color. It would still frame very well as a handsome historical display piece. Measures approximately 17" x 14"

This is a scarce and desirable Colton map from one of America’s premier 19th-century cartographers. Great for collectors of Pacific Northwest history, Oregon/Washington territorial maps, or Western Americana.
