BEAUTIFUL ORIGINAL AMERICAN MAP / NAVIGATION CHART
CA. 1844
DIMENSIONS
About 26" x 41" overall.
DESCRIPTION
Rare antebellum 19th century working nautical navigation chart on linen-backed paper. Legend reads "SOUTHERN COAST / U. STATES SHEET VIII / E. & G. W. BLUNT, NEW YORK." Depicts the Caribbean waters surrounding southern Cuba and the Bahamas, including Great Abaco, Little Abaco, Rum Cay, Sagua la Grande River and numerous coastal channels, cays, shoals, anchorages and navigational hazards. Meticulously detailed with soundings, navigational warnings and coastal notations intended for maritime use. Has many hand written notations indicating extensive use in the pre-Civil War period.
The cartographer was Charles Copley (1800-1880). This map was first published in 1844, with subsequent undated re-issues as late as 1862. Especially interesting are numerous, faintly legible hand written pencil navigational notes, including one dated May 2nd, 1868, indicating its use during or shortly after the American Civil War.
Map will be shipped in a sturdy shipping tube.
