Elegant Decorative CUP & SAUCER Set, Austrian manufactured by MZ CM-R (Moritz Zdekauer) in Altrolau, Bohemia, Austria (Now Czechoslovakia), PINK ROSES & BUDS Pattern w/Green & GREY Leaves, circa 1884-1909
DESCRIPTION: This cup & saucer set was skillfully hand painted by the artist, OCC. The design includes a looping swag garland of pink roses on the outside of the cup with smaller rose bud sprays on the outside of the cup. The cup is smooth rimmed with a delicate handle. The scalloped saucer has 6 large scallops that have inter-spaced smaller scallops with a wide, gold band accenting the scallops. The area between the looping swag garland and the verge has another gold band with small raised gold beads. This is also next to the foot of the slightly fluted cup. The rims are trimmed in gold and the handle is trimmed in gold. The porcelain is very light weight and delicate. The background color is a satin white finish with the inside of the cup being the glossy high white of the porcelain. The overall quality of the design is quite professional.
CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, its condition is superb. We can find only a very minor manufacturing defect and no damage. There is small nick on the outside rim of the cup that was painted over with the gold trim. See what appears to be the black dot on the rim in photos #5 and #9. There are no chips, other nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. Please study the photos to check the overall condition.
DIMENSIONS: The cup has a diameter of 3 3/4" and a height of 2" with a capacity of 7 ounces. The deep scalloped rimmed saucer has a diameter of 5 5/8" and a height of 13/16".
HISTORY/MARKS: In 1884, Moritz Zdekauer purchased the factory in Altrohlau, Bohemia Austria that had been started in 1810 by Benedikt Hasslacher. The letters “MZ” have been a continuous part of the logo to the current day including being on the factory building today. In 1909, C. M. Hutschenreuther acquired the company naming it Altrohlauer Porzellanfabriken (Altrohlau Porcelain Factories) while changing the mark, but retaining the MZ designation. After having been nationalized in 1945, the company was again privatized in 1992 and is currently known as Starorolský Porcelán Moritz Zdekauer a.s., located in Stará Role, Czech Republic. As was true with the original MZ porcelain, all of the Hutschenreuther Companies were trend setters of high quality porcelain. The mark (backstamp) on this piece was used 1884-1909. This is mark #3 as cited by the website marks4ceramics.
