This original military map comes from a large batch of German and Japanese examples captured by the US Army during WW2. They were assessed, processed and held by the US ARMY MAP SERVICE before eventually being donated to a prominent University. After more than 60 years in their archives, the maps were recently 'deaccessioned' and offered for sale. Most have official military ink stamps of some kind or other, but none of them were ever stamped by the University.
The example offered here is a "DEUTSCHE HEERESKARTE" (German Army Map) of Sicily entitled "CATANIA", which covers the coastline on which the British amphibious landings came ashore during OPERATION HUSKY.
The map was printed in July 1943, the same month the operation began.
It's headed "Nur für den Dienstgebrauch" (equivalent to a "RESTRICTED" British military map).
