An original WW2 British War Office "ARMY / AIR" map of FRANCE entitled "RENNES".
Printed April 1943.
It came to me with four other maps of France, a number of captured German maps of Normandy, and a 'SECRET' hardback manual entitled "Notes on G.S.G.S. maps of France, Belgium and Holland'. (Surviving examples of this manual were only de-classified in the late 1960's.)
What's particularly intriguing about the five War Office maps (POITIERS, EPINAL, AUXERRE, ORLEANS, RENNES) is that they all cover areas 'way behind enemy lines' that saw activity by the S.A.S. during Operation Overlord and the brief period that followed. I'd love to be able to prove a connection between these activities and the maps' original owner, but sadly I don't have a name for him, so their provenance is lost to History.
In decent 'field used' condition, with a single repair which is shown clearly for your inspection in my last image. The area had obviously snagged and torn open a flap, but it has now been carefully secured to the rear with strips of a specialist acid free (non-yellowing) archive repair tape of the kind used by museums and libraries etc.
Will be shipped as per its existing fold lines.
