Nippon M-in-Wreath Six Sided Bowl Hand Painted Clematis Flowers Gold 1911-1918
NIPPON Exquisite Decorative BLOWN Mold 6-Sided BOWL, M-in-Wreath mark, GOLD on WHITE w/Light YELLOW WASH, Hand Painted PURPLE CLEMATIS FLOWERS w/BLACK Outlining, from Moraimura Bros. in Noritake, Japan, circa 1911-1918
DESCRIPTION: The beautiful hand painted 6 sided bowl was produced using gold on white with a purple, green, blue, black and yellow color palette with a light yellow wash of varying tints. The purple clematis flowers with their yellow centers are nestled in their green leaves. The black outlining really makes the flowers pop out. The blown mold was artfully executed by a skillful potter. The herringbone gold scrollwork was hand painted in a manner to make it look worn and the flowers are painted over the top of the gold. There is small raised gold beading next to the gold painted scalloped & embossed rim. This is beautifully and subtlety executed.
CONDITION: While this bowl is classified as used, the condition is superb. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. There is no age appropriate wear to the gold or paint. See the photos.
DIMENSIONS: The top diameter of the bowl is 7 3/4" while the bottom diameter is 4 3/8". The height is 2 1/4".
HISTORY/MARKS: Morimura Bros. formed the trading and decorating company in 1876 which evolved into Noritake. Noritake Company has a rich history of producing fine bone china all the way from January 1, 1904 when the Nippon Toki Kaisha Ltd - the forerunner to the present Noritake Company - was formed in the village of Noritake, a small suburb near Nagoya, Japan. The first reported U.S. registry for a Noritake backstamp for importing is 1911. The backstamp on this set is the green M-in-Wreath Mark. The M-in-Wreath Mark is attributed to Noritake and its forerunner in the 1890’s to 1921 time period. In Collecting Noritake A to Z Art Deco & More, David Spain shows that Noritake substituted Japan for Nippon in their backstamps starting in 1918. In ABC’s of Collecting Nippon Porcelain, Van Patten attributes the M-in-Wreath’s mark #47 to since 1911. This seems to narrow the window of use for the M-in-Wreath mark to 1911-1918.
