This atmospheric composition depicts an ornate decorative vase alongside a porcelain bowl, rendered in a restrained palette with expressive brushwork and soft natural light. The painting has a distinctly European academic studio feel typical of Italian still lifes from the late 1930s–1940s.


Executed in oil on artist board and housed in an elegant gilt frame.


Attributed to Santo Gatto based on the cursive signature on the lower right.


Born: August 25, 1887, in Rivarolo Ligure (Genoa area).

• Died: 1957 in Genoa.

• He had a background in mathematics and science (worked as a teacher and builder) before turning seriously to art around 1930. He studied at the Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti in Genoa, focusing on oil, watercolor, and engraving. 

• Active in Genoa exhibitions in the 1930s–1950s (e.g., Promotrice di Belle Arti, Gruppo degli Artisti Genovesi in 1948, local shows). He produced still lifes (natura morta), landscapes (often with a precise, almost hyperreal or metaphysical quality), trompe l’oeil works, genre scenes, and portraits.
