The item

This is an interesting as well as rather pretty studio pottery jug from the 1930s. It was produced under the Danesby Ware brand, by Bourne, in Denby, perhaps better known later by Post-War vintage collectors as Denby Ware.

The company, with a history that goes back to the early 1800s, was a follower rather than a leader during the 1920s-1930s Art Deco period and this is an interesting example of  Bourne decorating a jug in a Deco-like abstract, sponge-effect floral design. It is part of its traditional English garden 'Herbaceous Border' range. Once you study the vase and its decoration you begin to appreciate what a delightful artistic representation has been achieved, mainly by using shades of green and yellow on a plain stoneware background.

This jug, or pitcher, has probably spent most of its life on display, and will probably continue to do so, but if you want to put it to work as a water jug, for instance, it has a maximum capacity of 2.5 pints.

Condition

The jug is around 90 years old and rapidly approaching official antique status, but it has survived well and is in good condition i.e. no chips or cracks or discolouration. The only evidence we notice of its long life is typical light crazing in the glaze, noticeable mainly under close scrutiny, on the lighter areas.

In the UK, we normally use the Royal Mail and our shipping charge is now based on the 1st Class Signed-for service to give items the best chance of arriving with buyers quickly and safely and avoiding disappointment. Services which just offer tracking, where parcels can be left unattended on doorsteps, is unsuitable for rare, elderly irreplaceable pieces. And we only charge buyers what the Post Office charges us. 

International shipping? Since Covid, we have started to use eBay's Global Shipping Programme because it has proved to be competitive and reliable. It also takes care of the international paperwork, which is helpful for buyers and sellers at a time when international tariffs keep changing. This item, however, is light enough to be sent using the Royal Mail's Airmail service. If you want a price for this service please contact us before buying.
