This First Indian Round Table Conference was organized by
the British Government and Indian political personalities in response to the
growing demands for ‘Swaraj’ or self-rule for India on the recommendations made
to the British Prime Minister, Ramsay MacDonald, who chaired the Conference, by
Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the Indian Viceroy Lord Irwin in response to the Simon
Commission report submitted in May 1930.
Various British and Indian politicians attended with the main
topic of discussion being about the constitution and India's future.
The First Indian Round Table Conference did not produce any significant results due to Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of the prominent Indian National Congress party boycotting the Conferencewith the British government realizing that the participation of the Indian National Congress was necessary in any discussion about the future of constitutional government in India, a second Indian Round Table Conference were held subsequently in London from 7th September 1931 to 1st December 1931.
