I am selling a beautiful shino matcha tea bowl by Kato Ken (加藤健, 1937–2010) who was a Japanese potter from Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture, part of the celebrated Kato family of Mino potters. He specialized in Shino ware, particularly bold, round tea bowls and vases.

This is a great example of his round shape bowl with beautiful shino, iron painting and good to handle. Excellent shino pottery in this price range.

There is no damage; the bowl is in excellent condition. Does not show signs of use. Comes in an original signed wooden box with original cloth and artist brochure (latest year 1998). The wooden box might show some signs of age. The bowl is signed with the artist signature mark.

Trained within the Mino tradition, he continued the Kato lineage that includes masters such as Kato Tokurō and Kato Kōzō. Ken’s work is known for its generous forms, soft feldspathic surfaces, and warm flame-swept tones that embody the rustic yet refined character of classic Shino. Although not as widely promoted internationally as Tokurō or Kōzō, his pieces are respected in Japan and appreciated by collectors who value authentic Mino Shino rooted in family tradition.
