A striking two-strand necklace strung with graduating faceted black glass beads, the smaller beads cut in the characteristic angular English style whilst the larger central beads display bold round faceting with a deep glassy lustre. The beads graduate from tiny angular examples at the ends through to substantial central rounds of considerable presence, the two strands working together to create a layered effect of real visual weight and depth.

Necklaces of this type were enormously fashionable during the Victorian period as mourning wear and beyond, with French Jet black glass offering an accessible yet visually compelling alternative to genuine Whitby jet whilst retaining the sombre, light-catching quality so prized by Victorian taste. This is a long and generous example that would wear beautifully doubled or as a full-length statement piece.
