Pensa Suhr Dinky ST "The Space Ace" Violet Green Splat Finish (Kakogawa Store)

Description

1987 Pensa-Suhr 1987 Dinky ST "The Space Ace" Violet Green Splat Finish

This legendary guitar was created in 1985 by Rudy Pensa of Rudy's Music, a New York music store, and John Suhr, who would later found Suhr Guitars, in response to the demands of musicians at the time.

The year 1987, when John Suhr was 29 years old, coincided with the time he was creating the curved-top guitar that would become the prototype for the famous MK-1, marking a significant step in his legendary career.

This guitar is a valuable piece in guitar history, featuring a body and neck provided by the world-renowned guitar builder Tom Anderson, and components made by John Suhr himself before his move to the Fender Custom Shop.

The body is made of alder. The finish is now known as Space Ace. It is likely one of the earliest Space Ace guitars, highlighting its rarity. With its black base and scattered violet and green accents, this guitar possesses a truly unique presence. It exudes a powerful individuality not only in sound but also visually.

The thin, slim neck is made of what appears to be rosewood or pau ferro. The neck pocket and heel bear stamps that could be considered evidence of Tom Anderson's involvement, as well as John Suhr's own signature. (Nut width 1F: approx. 40.45mm, fingerboard end: approx. 54.50mm, neck thickness 1F: approx. 17.98mm, 12F: approx. 19.34mm)

The most distinctive feature of this instrument lies in its electronics. The pickup configuration features a Seymour Duncan 80s Hot Rails Neck (SHR-1n) in the middle position and a Seymour Duncan 80s JB (JBJ) in the bridge position. Both are humbuckers, but their internal structure allows for versatile coil switching. This guitar features a 5-way selector and special wiring with a Q-Filter, achieving a range of sounds distinct from typical SSH or HH configurations, despite its passive design.

First, the 5-way selector's basic operation is not simply a 5-way switch:
Position 1: Series connection of the rear humbucker.
Position 2: Mix of the middle (parallel) and bridge (series) pickups.
Position 3: Sound of the middle neck-side coil alone.
Position 4: Mix of the middle neck-side coil and the rear bridge-side coil.
Position 5: Outputs the sound of the rear bridge-side coil alone.

In addition, it features an on/off switch for preset tones. This preset tone circuit is only active in positions 2, 3, and 4, producing a sound with a wah-like nuance. This switch allows for instant switching of the Q-filter's character. The design strongly emphasizes responsiveness for live performances and recording.

As the specifications above show, this guitar is meticulously crafted with the philosophy of maximizing the range of sound shaping possible with a limited set of controls. It seamlessly covers the power of a humbucker, the delicate nuances of a single-coil, and the intermediate range, possessing the potential to handle any genre.

The more you play it, the more you'll appreciate its design intent and the depth of its sound-shaping capabilities—a truly exceptional instrument.

While there are some scratches, pick marks, and dents from use, it is in playable condition and in excellent condition.
