Paulson
lathes are German made to Henry Paulson & Co. specifications. This lathe is the standard model with plain
tailstock, tilt-over tool rest, and double cone bearings of hardened
steel. The bed is WW components compatible. Spindle bore supports 8mm WW collets, Height
of centers is 50mm, and Length of bed 12”.
- The spindle bearings have been cleaned and
lubricated to give like new performance. Axial backlash has been set to
specification. A head indexing lock pin
is included.
- The tailstock has been
taken apart, cleaned, polished, lubricated, reassembled, and backlash set for
like new feel.
This lathe
is mounted on a Borel cast aluminum base.
- The casting has been re-machined to provide a flat surface for the bed
anchoring bolt and washer. This ensures
the bed is held to the base in a solid fashion.
- New rubber feet have been
installed that are easily replaced vs. the pushed in originals.
- The motor mount is my custom design and
readily supports belt tension adjustment.
This is achieved by a pair of linear bearings that only allow the motor
to move forwards and backwards relative to the lathe bed. When the desired belt tension is found, the
moving plate is clamped with a knob. This motor carriage assembly is attached to
the bottom of the Borel base. The
adjustment motion is restrained by the slot in the moving plate. The motor is mounted to an adapter plate using
8-32 captive PEM nuts before attachment to the moving plate. Thus, other motors can be easily mounted for
use having different footprints.
- This
solution is rugged and simple to use without the need for any tools vs. any of
the solutions presented elsewhere.
The drive
motor is a L&R 1/10hp universal motor.
- That has been cleaned of brush waste and
debris, new bearings installed and oil reservoir pads cleaned and refreshed
with new oil, the commutator fingers turned down, undercut, and polished to
ensure the best electrical power is conveyed to the windings, and a new power
cord.
- The motor runs quite quiet with
this servicing.
- Speed control is done
with a Linemaster Switch Corp Model 650-5C3 foot pedal unit. Performance is very smooth and the pedal
assembly does not slide around on the floor.
- Wiring is simple as the motor simply plugs into the pedal assembly and
the assembly then to the wall outlet.
- A
new round belt has been assembled and installed onto the lathe head assembly.
Overall,
this is a fine watchmaker’s lathe, that supports any of the WW accessories, and
is ready for many years of quality service.
