M.G. CONTRERAS Manuel Contreras 25th Anniversary Model Double Tapa, 1992
Description
Manuel Contreras 25th Anniversary Model DoubleTapa, 1992
Manuel González Contreras, Contreras I (1928-1994), was born in Madrid, Spain. He worked as a craftsman in José Ramírez's workshop for about three years in the 1960s, and then became independent around 1962. He is a renowned luthier and one of Madrid's leading guitar makers.
Besides six-string guitars, he also produced multi-string guitars, as well as a wide variety of models including double-top guitars, models without soundholes (developed with Carlevaro), and models with double back panels.
After his death, Pablo Manuel González Contreras, Contreras II (1959-2011), took over the workshop.
This 1992 model is a valuable example of the DoubleTapa, a rare model with a double back panel construction, dating from the time of Contreras I.
While guitars by José Ramirez and Paulino Bernabe often feature a double-layered cypress back, this guitar has a double-layered back. Furthermore, it has a double-layered back structure that covers the outer layer from the back to the sides. The aim of this design seems to be to enhance vibration efficiency by covering the contact points between the body and the instrument during playing—the right arm, left leg, and chest—and to minimize interference from body contact. It could be considered a back and side panel design for an armrest.
The bracing on the soundboard also has a unique arrangement.
Although there are a few small scratches on the soundboard, there are very few other scratches, and it remains in very clean condition.
The label includes the model name, a designation indicating it's a 25th-anniversary model, Contreras' signature, and a kind of inscription similar to a dedication in Japanese guitars.
The saddle has grooves for each of the six strings. The tuning pegs are Fustero.
The volume is decent, but it's not the loud sound of a modern double-top guitar; it has a well-balanced resonance. The tone possesses both softness and brightness, and along with its wide dynamic range, it's a guitar that firmly supports the player's expression.
This is an ambitious and valuable work by Contreras I.
Please try it out.
