Exquisite Decorative SCALLOPED AVON Shape CUP & SAUCER from ROYAL ALBERT BONE CHINA, BLUE & MULTICOLOR CHELSEA BIRD w/GOLD Trim, from Longton, Staffordshire, England, circa 1940's
DESCRIPTION: The beautiful scalloped Avon shape blue Chelsea Bird cup & saucer set was produced in a striking multicolor color palette with gold trim. This has the deep blue color accent with warm yellow scrollwork next to the scalloped rim on the cup & saucer. The floral sprays look so crisp with their roses and petite blue flowers surrounding the Chelsea bird. The handle and foot of the cup are beautifully trimmed in gold. CONDITION: While this cup & saucer set is classified as used, the condition is superb. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. There are no utensil marks. There is no gold wear or colors. See the photos.
DIMENSIONS: The cup has a diameter of 3 7/8" with a height of 2 1/2" while it is 2 3/4" to the top of the handle. The cup has a capacity of 6 ounces. The deep saucer has a diameter of 5 1/2" with a height of 15/16".
HISTORY/MARKS: Thomas C. Wild joined his father Thomas Wild in purchasing Albert Work in 1895. Upon his father’s death in 1898, he became sole proprietor adding St. Mary’s Works in Longton in 1905. As Wild’s business prospered, he acquired other factories and pottery business. By the early 1920’s he owned or controlled 15 potteries. Thomas’ sons, Thomas E. and Frederick C., were admitted to the partnership in 1917 and the father retired in 1932. The business was incorporated as Thomas C. Wild & Sons, Ltd. Thomas C. Wild & Sons (Royal Albert) took over Paragon China in 1960, then merged with the Lawley Group to become Allied English Potteries in 1964, subsequently Paragon and Royal Albert joined the Royal Doulton Group in 1972. The mark on the cup is identified as used in 1940's by the Royal Albert website (royalalbertpatterns). The registration #839184 was introduced in 1941.
