Pentti Sarpaneva (originally a graphic designer) started making jewelry in the 1950s, experimenting with recycled materials, concerned that jewelry should be affordable for ordinary people. In the mid sixties he became a designer for Kalevala Koru, and in 1967 for Turun Hopea Oy, where he became artistic director. His raw, expressive design is easily recognizable.
